The Hands That Feed You
Performative Dinner 2010
For the performance symposion ‘This sentence is now being performed’ at the Academy of Fine Arts by Carola Dertnig and Felicitas Thun Hohenstein, two fellow students and I are asked to organise a performative dinner for the participants of the symposium as well as for the audience.
The space where the dinner takes place is the auditorium of the Academy of Fine Arts. Amongst our guests are such theorists as Philip Auslander but also artists like Simone Forti and Martha Rosler.
A dinner table serves as stage as well, which is built out of 70 different tables.
Hence the audience is integrated into the whole event, which is not only happening on the stage, but also within, around and above it. Therefore they are part of a circuit, dealing with desire and its satisfaction, taking and giving, observing and being observed. The evening and its inscenation is clearly structured and following a schedule, with regard to content. The theatrical and performative elements question and blur their own lines.
